Finding Your Communities in Tech

  1. Learn bit a about a few communities that interest you.

      Talk with Your Partner

    • How is the organization structured?
    • How big is the organization?
    • What kind of support do they offer?
    • Do they host events? If so, where?
    • Do they use social media platforms?

    Some examples of communitites for groups underrepresented in computer science are listed below. There are many, many more groups out there!

  2. Connect with a few communities that appeal to you. Follow them on social media, sign up for their newsletter, or attend an event online or in person.

Jobs and Income

Many of the above communities share job listings with the public.

  1. Find three job postings in computer science that look interesting to you. Write down:

    • The job title
    • The qualitications required (degree, experience, special skills, etc.)
    • The salary

Beyond Being a Programmer

Computers and programming is important to careers far beyond software engineers.

  1. Choose a career you are interested in, and research how computers are used on that field.
  2. Look into what kinds of specialized training in software packages and/or programming are relevant in that field.
